About Houston Livestock Show And Rodeo
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo also known as RodeoHouston, is nearly a century-old livestock show and rodeo that was founded under the idea of giving back to the community and raising awareness of proper livestock care. Referred as the city of Houston’s signature event, the HLSR is the largest livestock and rodeo in the world. With rodeo events, concerts, food, and shopping it’s no wonder that the event draws in millions of fans every year.
More Than Your Basic Rodeo
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was established back in January of 1931, with their first show debuting in April of 1932. Originally only consisting of local livestock and agricultural events, the show only lasted a week. In the early 1940’s the organizers of the event decided to add musical performances to the show. Starting out they had localized performers to entertain throughout the week, eventually recruiting big time performers starting with Gene Autry. Today the event includes live performances by some of the biggest names in music, parades, bar-b-que contests, trail rides, as well as the rodeo and livestock show.
Community Impact
Created originally with the intention of giving back to the community of Houston, the HLSR is one of the largest charities that the city has seen. With fans travelling from outside of Houston to see the show, it has impacted the local economy tremendously. It is estimated that every year $500 million is funneled back into the city of Houston indirectly from the event. Additionally, HLSR gives back scholarships, grants, and graduate assistance programs to students attending any college or university in Texas. Any additional funds are given to local elementary schools to help educate the youth on agriculture. An estimated total of over $430 million has been donated directly from HLSR since they began operation in 1932.
